Writing Center

What we do

We all struggle with writing at one time or another, and we all benefit from having another set of eyes and ears to test our writing conversation out on a real audience. That’s why Indiana Tech’s Writing Center is here. We are about the person, not the paper. We want to help create better writers.

The Writing Center is a place where undergraduate and graduate students on our Fort Wayne campus can get free support and feedback on writing and presentation assignments. We are not a drop-off editing service. Instead, we are here to work one-on-one with all writers, at all levels of proficiency, for all courses. We help students at any stage of their writing process–brainstorming a topic, formatting a final draft or practicing a presentation. Here are some additional ways we help:

For students

We offer assistance for all Indiana Tech disciplines, colleges and courses.

If you are a student within our PhD in Global Leadership program, contact the department at phd@indianatech.edu to arrange for writing assistance.

Students taking courses at campuses away from Fort Wayne or online may get free writing assistance from Tutor.com. You can access this resource when you are signed into Canvas.

For faculty

We offer classroom presentations about our services and answer any questions your students may have. We can also develop workshops for faculty, students, and staff. Make a request, whether for a specific assignment, specific need, or any training related to writing and presenting.

Alina Garcia
Alina

Graduate Student

Hi everyone! Writing is something that I have always been passionate about since I was very young. Because writing has been such a massive part of my life, I know how challenging and complex it can become. My purpose is never to shut you down or judge; my job is to help you make little changes to improve your writing and gain more confidence. Remembering that everyone starts somewhere is imminent, and there is no such thing as a “perfect writer.” As a criminal justice major and psychology minor, I am familiar with writing many reports, research papers, and analytical works. I have also completed the Legal Studies Certificate, which includes the core law classes, where case briefs and research papers are always present. I would be more than happy to assist in any literary category needed! Outside of being a tutor, I play soccer here for our women’s soccer team and am a huge Criminal Minds fan. I know that asking for extra eyes for your paper or presentation can seem a little scary, but I want to reassure you that I am super nice and here to help! Feel free to schedule as many appointments with me as you need, and I hope to see you soon!

If you would like to make an appointment with Alina Garcia outside regular walk-in or regularly scheduled hours, email her at AMGarcia01@indianatech.net.

Kat

Junior, Psychology and Criminal Justice

Hello! My name is Kat, and I am studying Psychology and Criminal Justice here at Indiana Tech in hopes of one day becoming a forensic psychologist for a federal law enforcement agency. Being in two majors that require a lot of writing allows me to continuously improve and work on my own writing skills so I can then help my peers become better writers themselves at the writing center. Growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada- a state that is ranked 49 in education- I relied heavily on my mentors and teachers, who were willing to use their extra time to help me achieve my academic goals. In turn, I would like to extend that helping hand to those who might need it at Indiana Tech.

Paige Thamer
Paige

My name is Paige Thamer! I am a double major in Criminal Justice and Psychology, with a minor in English and a minor in Humanities. I have extensive experience with reading, writing, and editing, with a background as an editor-in-chief for my high school’s yearbook, as well as writing and presenting arguments for Mock Trial. I have always enjoyed argumentative writing as an aspiring criminal prosecution attorney! Outside of being a writing center tutor, I am also involved on campus as a dance team member, tour guide, OSS tutor, and an RA on campus. Additionally, I am from Southern California and love running, reading, outdoor sports like waterskiing and swimming, and spending time with friends and family. As a tutor, I want to help you gain confidence and learn to enjoy the process of writing. I am here to help in any way I can! I hope to see you at the Writing Center!

Thomas

Freshman, Biomedical Engineering/Mechatronics and Robotics Design

Hello, my name is Thomas, and I am a freshman at Indiana Tech with a profound passion for writing. Since a young age, I’ve been captivated by the art of crafting words, leading me to compete in several writing competitions where I received honorable mentions at the state level. As a self-taught writer, I understand the challenges of finding inspiration and am eager to help others overcome these hurdles and unlock their creative potential. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy immersing myself in music and staying active through various workout routines. I look forward to sharing my love for writing and helping others achieve their literary goals.

Zoe

Hello! Writing has been a hobby of mine for as long as I can remember. I always find joy in writing, even the long research essays. I am currently a Junior, and I am a psychology and criminal justice double major. I have taken multiple law, psychology, and criminal justice classes, so I have experience with the research papers, essays, reports, and analytical essays that professors will assign. Outside of academics, I am the President of the Psychology Club, and I am a member of the College of Arts and Sciences Student Advisory Board. In my free time, I enjoy writing, reading, swimming, running, puzzles, and hanging out with friends. I love being outdoors and going on hikes. I look forward to seeing you at the Writing Center! I want to help you in whatever way I can!

Director of the Writing Center

Carrie Rodesiler
Dr. Carrie Rodesiler

Director

Many years ago, prior to becoming an Assistant Professor of English at Indiana Tech, I was a tutor at a writing center. I had always loved writing, but working as a tutor showed me that I also had a passion for helping people. I’m delighted to return to this work though in a slightly different role, this time supporting our tutors as they provide students with feedback on their writing. I hope you will consider scheduling an appointment with one of them to talk about your next writing project!

Professor Rodesiler is the assistant director of Indiana Tech’s Writing Center. If you have questions about the Writing Center, email her at carodesiler@indianatech.edu.
